Japan defeated Cuba 10-6 in the championship of the inaugural World Baseball Classic. Daisuke Matsuzaka, the starter for Japan in the final game, won the tournament MVP award.

Bronson Arroyo was traded to the Cincinnati Reds earlier this week for Willy Mo Pena and a cash consideration.

Alfonso Soriano played left field for the Washington Nationals for the first time on Wednesday. He had sat out Monday's game and GM Jim Bowden threatened to put him on the disqualified list.

Tampa Bay reliever Shinji Mori will miss the entire season after suffering a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Mori was a candidate to close for Tampa Bay.
Al Leiter retired earlier week after a nineteen year career. On Sunday, Leiter pitched to one batter in a spring training game, got the batter to ground out, and then handed the ball to Yankee pitching coach Ron Guidry and left the field with tears in his eyes.

Leiter retires with an ERA of 3.80 and 162 career wins. He won two World Series rings, one with Florida and one with Toronto, and made it to the World Series a third time with the New York Mets. He started and ended his career with the New York Yankees. The two-time all-star also won the Branch Rickey Award and the Roberto Clemente Award during his career. Both awards are for community service.

Long-time NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue will retire in July. He has held the job since 1989. He will serve as an advisor until 2008 once a new commissioner is selected.

Terrell Owens signed a three year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

Brian Griese signed a five year deal with the Chicago Bears.

Adam Vinateri has agreed to a deal with the Indianapolis Colts. The kicker had been with New England.

The Jets traded defensive lineman John Abraham to Atlanta for a first round draft pick from the Denver Broncos.

Knicks rookie Channing Frye will miss the remainder of the year with an injured knee.

Hockey
Minnesota center Todd White is out for the rest of the season with a broken leg.

Colorado Avalanche forward Alex Tanguay will miss a month with a sprained MCL.

The Los Angeles Kings fired their head coach, Andy Murray.
