This past Saturday was the final home meet of the year for the Brandeis Mens and Womens Swimming teams. It was also the final home meet for the graduating seniors. The women dominated their meet against Worcester Polytechnical Institute. The men, on the other hand, had a tough battle and lost at the very end.
The women won their match by a score of 145 to 130. Brandeis dominated so well that they clinched the victory after event 21. The Judges won their first four events, including Silver Deutch 07 winning the 1000-Yard Freestyle (11:43.35), Sharon Makowsky 06 winning the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:03.27), and Lalin Anik 06 winning the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:07.07). After losing an event, Brandeis rolled off five straight victories. In the fifth of these wins Makowsky broke the school record for the 200-Yard Backstroke with a time of 2 minutes and 17.86 seconds. The previous record was by Tarida Anantachai: a time of 2 minutes and 18.17 seconds, earned four years ago.
The final home event for the Brandeis women was the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay. In that relay four graduating seniors, Carissa Jackel 06, Joanna Roberts 06, Makowsky, and Sarah Evans 06, won with a time of 4:03.01.
The Brandeis men had a long battle with WPI, but in the end WPI won. Brandeis started off well by winning their first two events, but then won only five of the remaining fourteen events. Hal Grossman 07 won three events, including the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:00.42). Matt Lerman 07 won both the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:03.41) and the 200-Yard Breaststroke (2:23.22). Nick Rice 08 was the only other winner for Brandeis, winning the 200-Yard Backstroke (2:06.51). In the second to last event, the 200-Yard Individual Medley, WPI pulled ahead for good.
After the 50-Yard Freestyle, there was a ceremony to honor the ten graduating seniors. The families of most of the graduating seniors were in attendance.
