Letter to the Editor: Republicans feel they cannot speak freely

Published: February 3, 2006

To the Editor:
While I appreciate Kevin Montgomerys perspective on Brandeis political activism, and his aversion to political correctness (Self-aggrandizing extremists destroy the campus community Jan. 20), I feel obliged to correct his statements regarding the Brandeis Republicans.

Contrary to Montgomerys assertion, our Conservative Coming Out Week last spring was not intended to coincide with any event or initiative of TRISK, and, as far as we are aware, it did not. We stand behind our Coming Out Week activities and will continue working to help Brandeis conservatives feel more secure in their political beliefs. The point of this event was to show that many republicans feel unsafe speaking freely at Brandeis. On a more general note, we do not see our work as political hackery. Last year, we mobilized Brandeis students to support the Bush-Cheney campaign in New Hampshire and since then, we have continued to connect Republican students with opportunities to engage in the political process.
