Brandeis University's Community Newspaper — Waltham, Mass.

September 2006 Issue

A tale of two bloggers

Keeping a blog carries a risk, especially as we get ready to leave Brandeis and enter the world of graduate school and employment. These risks need to be recognized as we continue to conduct ourselves online.

Faculty first, safety second

The reassignment of the East Quad lot from a student lot to a faculty lot is understandable. What is harder to grasp is why a parking area must first become a faculty lot before it is expanded, properly lit and properly paved.

‘Deis raises $81.3 mil

Brandeis set a university fundraising record of $81.25 million in cash gifts for the fiscal year ending on Jun. 30, according to the University Office of Development. This eclipsed the old record of $72 million, which was set in 2003.

Signing away democracy

Like most Americans I hadnt heard of presidential signing statements until this summer, I had never thought it mattered what the president said when he signed a bill into law. But a recent report by the American Bar Association has outlined the way President Bush has used these statements to rewrite and rescind legislation.

Java City leaving Shapiro

Java City in the Shapiro Campus Center is going to be replaced by Einstein Bros. Bagels within the next month, according to University Dining Services and the Department of Student Activities.

Trustees elect five newest members

According to the Brandeis Department of Media Relations, the Brandeis Board of Trustees elected 5 new members: Morton Ginsberg 56, Vartan Gregorian, Jonathon S. Jacobson, Dorothy Pierce and John Usdan.

Despite lack of Treasurer, club funding secure

The Brandeis University Student Union is currently operating without a treasurer, according to Union officials.

Library remodeled, IPTV upgraded

The beginning of the semester marked the completion of a series of policy changes, technology enhancements, and refurbishments in the Goldfarb Library and across campus, planned by Library and Technology Services (LTS).

Administration should alert students of local mass transit

A large part of the Brandeis experience is being able to spend a fair amount of time in the city of Boston. However, during the academic year shuttles only run from Thursday through Sunday for limited hours. Rather than necessarily expand these hours for a limited increase in student usage, the administration should attempt to alert students of other methods of transportation, namely buses run by the MBTA.
