Media sends mixed messages

Do these pants make me look fat? When most people hear this, they cant help but laugh because its used all too often. But in reality, its no laughing matter. With the increase in negative and often opposing media images, living in the American culture is more confusing than everespecially for women. They tell us to lose weightso we doonly to be told were too skinny. So we eat a little more, gain a few pounds, and there again starts the vicious cycle. It seems theres no way to win! Instead, it seems like theres an increase in the level of hypocrisy the media is practicing.

Candidates are not anything new

Following an American presidential is a maddening enough experience, but the irritating trend of commencing the campaign two years in advance of the polls is becoming unbearable. Ive tried to avoid it, when friends ask me What do you think of Obama? or What do you think of Clinton? my answer is that I try my best not to.

What breeds Brandeis awkwardness?

I love to hate Brandeis and Im quite good at it. With the living situations that are less than stellar, the financial aid packages that seem to only put me in more debt, and the administration canceling every other dance, its not hard to be skeptical of my college decision. Im sure on some deep level Im secretly in love with all the eccentricities that make this place so easy to criticize, even if I would never admit it to Jehuda.

Editorial: The world outside the bubble

Over the summer, the Brandeis Administration made a concerted effort to ensure that our campus is safer than ever. Many thousands of dollars were spent to guarantee that, should an incident occur at Brandeis, Public Safety and the Administration will be able to respond quickly, efficiently, and in the best interests of the student body. The new text-messenging alert system, and construction efforts around campus have made Brandeis a more secure place than ever before. This effort engulfed not only physical security, but also network security, as information was conveyed about how to stay safe and protect oneself from legal ramifications. We applaud the steps taken by the Administration to make our campus a secure environment in which to live and work.

Letter to the editor: Federal privacy laws don’t seem to apply at Brandeis

To the Editor,

Each year the Brandeis Registrar transfers students personal information to Bank of America so that a marketing letter, written by a Brandeis official, can be mailed to students homes, urging them to take out an affinity Mastercard. If Brandeis can get you to take out its credit card, the school will make a lot of money off you during your hopefully long and prosperous life!

Student Union treasury comes to club finance protocol compromise

Student Union clubs will now operate under a new system when dealing with individual club funds, said sources within the Union Treasury. These changes include the creation of a new Office of the Treasury as well as a new system for handling club finances.

UJ t-shirt case dismissed

At the end of the Spring 07 semester, the Union Judiciary dismissed a petition filed against Jacob Bockelmann 09 and Brandeis.CampusShirts.net, a student-led screen printing initiative, led by Bockelmann, that has printed shirts for various Brandeis clubs. The complaint cited a conflict of interest due to Bockelmanns previous position as a member of the Finance Board, and that undue pressure was being placed on clubs to use Bockelmanns service.

ICC completes summer renovations

Long-awaited renovations to the Intercultural Center (ICC), proposed last spring by the organizations past director as well as the Student Union, were finally approved and implemented this summer.
