Read into it: get some chick lit

Okay, I know. I should probably be ashamed to admit that I read books from the genre known as “chick lit.” These books are supposedly predictable, boring, and too girly. But, I love them and I know most of you out there do too!

Manginah releases third album

Manginah is back with its hottest, latest CD, Yo backwards. The CD, directed by Ari Fleisher and Yuval Brokman, came out this summer, and it is the groups third album, following Songs from a World Tour of the East Coast (2001) and the inaugural Manginah (1997).

Editorial: Committee report leaves questions unanswered

When the Voices of Palestine exhibit, composed of paintings done by Palestinian children, was pulled from public view last semester, many were outraged. Students protested, and faculty members signed a petition against the move.

Meditations on hooking up

Last week, on Sept 29th, the good people of NPRs On Point interviewed some college sex columnists, including Amber Madison, recent Tufts grad and author of Hooking Up: A Girls All-Out Guide to Sex and Sexuality. A book deal after graduation? Well, lets just leave it at: Im jealous.

Social Life at Brandeis?

Many complain about the lack of a social scene at Brandeis University. Although I would contend that the social scene is what you make of it, I would agree to some extent that there is a kind of depression when one considers the lack of parties that present themselves at this university. Then I look back at my first Brandeis party, the one in the basement of a random house. It was fun, had drinks (virgin ones for those under 21, of course) and was not broken up by the po-po (so you dont embarrass yourselves in front of your friends, that phrase refers to the POLICE).
Who sponsored this party, kept it safe (and un-shady) and actually cared about whether people had too much to drink or needed a ride home or had a question about anything at all? Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) is the simple answer to that question. Sure, there are non-Greek options for parties on campus, but they lack the structure and safeguards that are present at fraternal ones, which are uptight, and rightfully so, about their reputations as respected organizations.

Conservative magazine bashes Brandeis TLCs

Last month, the conservative magazine the National Review Online (NRO) posted an online column denouncing themed housing at universities, specifically citing Brandeis Thematic Learning Communities (TLCs).

Back Pages plans dorm deliveries

After several bags of books delivered to Brandeis were stolen last month, independent bookstore Back Pages Books is taking steps to prevent future theft, according to store owner Alex Green 04.

Activist Bornstein visits ‘Deis

The first of two public appearances at Brandeis by Kate Bornstein, transgendered author, performer, and activist, occurred Wednesday night in the Sherman Function Hall. In addition to Wednesdays performance, Kate will also host a more informal chat about sex in the Shapiro Atrium on Friday and will speak in multiple classes. I was fortunate enough to see Kate from three very different angles: a theorist, a performer, and a classmate.

Undergraduate Research Program finds new funding

The Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) plans to reinstate the Undergraduate Research Program (URP) in the Spring 2007 semester, after it was suspended this fall due to a lack of funding, according to Michele Rosenthal, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and First Year Services. The UAA also plans to hire a full-time Assistant Dean for Scholarships and Fellowships.
