Volleyball comes up dry

Brandeis volleyball's struggles continued last weekend as in their first UAA Round Robin, the Judges fell hard: dropping the first match to Rochester 2-3. They were then swept out with losses to Emory (1-3) and Carnegie-Mellon (0-3).

This week in sports

Baseball
Pedro Martinez will not pitch in the postseason for the Mets due to a torn tendon in his left calf.

Saved by the Bell: our college years

Not since Elizbeth Berkley iced her nipples to pointy perfection in the campy classic Showgirls have “Saved by the Bell” alums created such a stir on the pop culture landscape. Now, not one, but two Bayside graduates are involved in separate, but in my opinion equally offensive, controversies.

Wisdom in shades of grey

Out in the far-western Pacific lies a young nation of widely-scattered islands and coral atolls called the Federated States of Micronesia. It covers an area of ocean as large as the United States, but its total land area is no bigger than Rhode Island. Among the hundreds of flat, ring-shaped atolls are Pingelap and Mokil (Mwoakilloa)… These islands have been of interest to geneticists because of the occurrence of a distinct form of total colorblindness, or achromatopsia, among their small populations…

What movie do you want to see?

The end of summer marks the end of the summer blockbusters, and ushers in a whole new crop of movies. This fall, films will be hitting our local Loew's that range from Sundance favorites and cartoon classics to serious Oscar contenders. The Hoot knows how important ten bucks can be, so we preview the fall's new movies for you here.

Read into it: get some chick lit

Okay, I know. I should probably be ashamed to admit that I read books from the genre known as “chick lit.” These books are supposedly predictable, boring, and too girly. But, I love them and I know most of you out there do too!

Manginah releases third album

Manginah is back with its hottest, latest CD, Yo backwards. The CD, directed by Ari Fleisher and Yuval Brokman, came out this summer, and it is the groups third album, following Songs from a World Tour of the East Coast (2001) and the inaugural Manginah (1997).

Editorial: Committee report leaves questions unanswered

When the Voices of Palestine exhibit, composed of paintings done by Palestinian children, was pulled from public view last semester, many were outraged. Students protested, and faculty members signed a petition against the move.

Meditations on hooking up

Last week, on Sept 29th, the good people of NPRs On Point interviewed some college sex columnists, including Amber Madison, recent Tufts grad and author of Hooking Up: A Girls All-Out Guide to Sex and Sexuality. A book deal after graduation? Well, lets just leave it at: Im jealous.

Social Life at Brandeis?

Many complain about the lack of a social scene at Brandeis University. Although I would contend that the social scene is what you make of it, I would agree to some extent that there is a kind of depression when one considers the lack of parties that present themselves at this university. Then I look back at my first Brandeis party, the one in the basement of a random house. It was fun, had drinks (virgin ones for those under 21, of course) and was not broken up by the po-po (so you dont embarrass yourselves in front of your friends, that phrase refers to the POLICE).
Who sponsored this party, kept it safe (and un-shady) and actually cared about whether people had too much to drink or needed a ride home or had a question about anything at all? Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) is the simple answer to that question. Sure, there are non-Greek options for parties on campus, but they lack the structure and safeguards that are present at fraternal ones, which are uptight, and rightfully so, about their reputations as respected organizations.
